King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia recently released its 20th annual
research assessment, 2050, and the results of the report are worrisome. The
investigation reveals a list of high-impact problems facing the Middle East,
North Africa and the Persian Gulf.
Issues range from increasing demand for food and oil, climate change,
water shortages, population growth, the problems of inequality and the impacts
of military conflicts.
Iran, Yemen and Iraq are all bracing for possible war, while Gaza faces an
unstable security situation. In Egypt, there are concerns about a struggling
economy, and high levels of pollution.
In Libya, there is an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus that has killed more
than 170 people, and many people are not confident they will survive.
Syria, Jordan and Iraq have not been spared from war and violence.
And Egypt and Saudi Arabia are facing strong resistance to their attempts to
ensure that women are able to drive cars, travel in public without the need for
a male chaperone, and to end discrimination.
According to the report, there is a shortage of food and water in many
countries, while Saudi Arabia is experiencing a shortage of water, and
consumption of water is projected to exceed supply in several Middle Eastern
countries. By 2050, demand for water is projected to increase by 36 percent,
to 1.8 trillion cubic meters (tcm) per year.
While more than half of the world's population will be living in cities by
2050, Africa will still account for two-thirds of the growth in urban
populations, according to the report, with cities in sub-Saharan Africa
projected to grow by more than half a billion people. Cities in Asia will see
the greatest increase in population, with the biggest cities predicted to
contain more than 15 million people.
"We are living in a world of ever-increasing urbanization and urban
population growth," said Naseem Al Awda, Executive Director of the
International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
"It is critical that people have access to water, and it is clear from
our work that we need to do much more to ensure that the needs of cities are
met," he said.
Al Awda said there was also a need to address urban air pollution,
greenhouse gas emissions, and land degradation.
His comments came in advance of the 2018 World
